Luciana Perin ( Melbourne, Australia) is an artist whose relationship with Australia and negotiation of culture and history within a given place, play an essential role in art production.

The piece presented in Process/Presence is an apron, her grandmother's apron, modelled with a paste similar to pasta. Perin's work deals with themes of perception of memory of place and people.

Her work confronts and questions preconceptions of ethnic identity as well as cross cultural practices. in her work her explorations of space and memory pass by a courageous challenge to ephemerality. The "humble and fragile materials, encapsulate the feeling of impermanence: as the pasta dries and cracks it expands……changing slowly, resembling less the initial shaped form/s created by the artist…. as are our recollections" ( Luciana Perin, comments to Landscape Forms I&II).

The medium, pasta indeed, looks almost solid despite its apparent suppleness, however its substance cannot be preserved easily. The dualism between transient memory, with objects that evoke it, and permanence, is articulated in a poignant as well as almost soothing struggle between displacement and sense of place.
