Daphne Cazalet

Born in India, Daphne was educated in the UK. She trained in theatre in London in the 60s, taught in Bristol and acted with various theatre companies including Bristol Street Theatre, Bristol Arts Centre and Barn Theatre, Dartington Devon.

In 1982, she migrated to Australia where she has continued her theatre work. Daphne has an extensive history of working professionally with communities through theatre and other art forms, in particular in Sydney's Western Suburbs where she was the first multicultural artsworker supported by the Australia Council for the Arts. She initiated many successful projects and created training tools that are still in use.

Daphne completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree with 1st class honours (supervision by NQ artist, Assoc. Prof. Anneke Silver) at James Cook University in 2002. In 2001 she was awarded the JCU Harry Hopkins Art Award. Daphne was awarded a doctorate in visual arts in 2009 at Charles Darwin University, Darwin, Australia. Her research culminated in exhibitions at the Northern Territories Library at Parliament House, Darwin and at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Townsville, Queensland.

Her large canvases and drawings have already been acquired by the JCU art collection as well as by private collections in Victoria, Queensland, UK., Switzerland, Germany and Holland.

In 2014 Cazalet was invited to install a section of her collection Fragmente Ripples within the Special Events program of that edition of Set Up, Bologna, in Italy.

In 2015 Cazalet has produced her first art book in limited edition entirely focusing on the Fragment Ripples body of work.

Daphne has since moved to Southern Italy where she now lives and paints on the Salento Peninsula in Puglia.

Nata in India, educata in India e Gran Bretagna, Daphne Cazalet ha studiato teatro a Londra negli anni sessanta, poi ha lavorato come attrice a Bristol. Nel 1982 e' emigrata in Australia dove ha continuato il lavoro teatrale e, contemporaneamente, ha iniziato diversi progetti di scrittura e performance, in collaborazione con donne e giovani immigrati di diverse nazionalità, sponsorizzati dal Consiglio Nazionale Australiano e da Amministrazioni regionali. Nel Queensland, dal 1992, ha lavorato come attrice in ruoli pricipali con la Tropic Sun Theatre Company, di Townsville, diretta da Jean-Pierre Voos. Piu' tardi, a Darwin, ha presentato il one-woman show “The Spider Witch; di John du Feu, sul tema delle donne emigrate, per il Darwin Fringe Festival, poi l'opera “The Girl from Elsewhere” per la Darwin Theatre Company.

Ha cominciato ad occuparsi di arte visiva nel 1998, dopo aver partecipato, in qualità di artista, ai vari Consigli Nazionali e Regionali per la pianificazione artistica del Paese.

Nel 2002 si è laureata in Arti Visive: 1st Class Honours presso la James Cook University, Townsville, Queensland -Australia-

Nel 2002 ha ricevuto il Premio artistico “JCU Harry Hopkins”.

Nel 2010 ha pubblicato, in seguito alla sua tesi, 'Water Over Skin: A Postcolonial Analysis Of The Transformation Of Cultural Identity' (Lambert Academic Publications, Germany).

Nel 2014 la collezione Fragmented Ripples è stata invitata a far parte delle installazioni speciali presentate durante quell'edizione di Set Up, Bologna.

Nel 2015 Cazalet ha prodotto il suo primo art book interamente incentrato sulla collezione Fragmente Ripples.

Le sue opere sono presenti in collezioni pubbliche e private in Australia, Gran Bretagna, Olanda, Svizzera e Germania.

E' tornata a vivere in Europa nel 2009 e risiede nella penisola del Salento, in Puglia.
